Fort Steuben was originally constructed by Capt. John Francis Hamtramck and the 1st American Regiment to protect the surveyors of the newly acquired Northwest Territory. A reconstructed fort built in accordance with the sketches and information from Capt. Hamtramck's letters and journals is now on the site.
