Performing and recording artist Celia Cruz, who is scheduled to appear on a U.S. quarter later this year, got her start in show business by participating in an amateur talent show in her native Cuba while still in her early twenties. Eventually, she became the singer for Cuba’s most popular orchestra at the time called ‘La Sonora Matancera.’ In 1960, while performing in Mexico City, Celia Cruz opted not to return to her native country which had been wracked by political revolution. Instead, she moved to New York City where she lived for the rest of her life.

In the U.S., Cruz teamed up with Tito Puente and his orchestra and became part of a new musical genre that was emerging called salsa. Wigs, flamboyant attire and shouting ‘¡Azúcar!’ during performances became her trademarks over a 60-year career. Celia Cruz recorded 75 albums, 23 of which achieved gold status. She received numerous awards during her career including a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, a National Medal of Arts and a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Grammy.

Celia Cruz died in 2003. She is laid to rest in her own mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
