Argotti Botanical Gardens dates back to 1774 and were originally the private gardens of Grandmaster Pinto. It was especially the collections of medicinal plants that were the most interesting.

The gardens became botanical gardens in 1805 when they were opened to the public. Today it is also part of the University of Malta, which has several plant collections in the gardens.

The botanical gardens are visited by many locals who enjoy the peace and quiet in the middle of the big city. Many tourists also visit the gardens. There is free access to the garden.

The plants in the garden are both trees, including very old trees, shrubs, flowers and cacti. These are plants that can grow in the Mediterranean climate, with rain in winter and very hot summer. The plants originate from the Mediterranean area, Southern Australia, South America, California and South Africa.
