The bench mark stamped as D 1437 1982 is a metal rod stationed here in 1982. The collar surrounding the bench mark originally had a covering lid, but the lid has been broken off from the collar. The identifying data is still visible, as is the rod.

Bench mark D 1437 1982 is at one of the corner formed by the convergence of three streets crossing close together. The streets involved in forming this "island" are Fredericksburg Road, West Summit Avenue and North Calaveras Street. Particularly, the Northeastern corner of the intersection formed by North Calaveras Street and West Summit Avenue is the corner where this bench mark is found. Look for a telephone pole by itself near this NE corner. The phone pole is between the curb along N. Calaveras Street on the west side of the pole and the concrete sidewalk that passes across the east side of the pole.
About 6 feet north of the telephone pole and centered between the curb and sidewalk on east and west sides is the bench mark. The top of the collar surrounding the rod is at ground level, so depending on the season, it may have a lot of grass or weeds growing around an even over it to make it difficult to see or find. If it isn't readily apparent, and if you have a metal detector device like a Garrett Pin Pointer device, you could easily find the metal collar and could uncover that specific area of its clutter, dirt or weeds to see the bench mark. Be sure to return the grasses or dirt after you ID the rod and get any photo you need of it.
The collar shows that this bench mark has had some rough treatment over time. Some to the metal forming the rim has been broken off in two places. The lid cover is also missing. Although some text is missing and some is hard to discern due to the metal being scrapped (probably by a lawnmower blade) the text on the collars of metal rod bench marks is standard text except for the stamped name identification and year placed date. Fortunately, these stamped data points have survived and are visible so the critical data is still fully intact. Because of the missing cover and the damaged text, the condition of this bench mark is POOR, although the steel rod itself is still fully functional.
Around the top of the collar's edge are three sections of text. The middle section give specific variable data about the bench mark itself. The right side and left side sections have standard information that reads the same on all metal rod bench mark collars. Filling in the broken text as needed, the edge text reads as follows:
Left section of text:
VERTICAL CONTROL MARK
UNLAWFUL TO DISTRUB
Middle section of text:
D 1437
1982
Right section of text:
