"It is a quite transformed building, although it preserves the foundations and part of the walls of a high-medieval construction. The original structure corresponds to a building with a basilica plan with three naves, of which the head was removed and replaced by the presbytery current, the central nave was raised and the side walls were opened to build several chapels.

The building does not preserve any type of ornamentation, but its construction and structural conditions allow it to be considered as a work fully ascribed to the formulas of initial Romanesque architecture. In fact, it must have been one of the most ambitious works built in Cerdanya during the 11th century.

The parish of Alp is mentioned in the act of consecration of the Seu d'Urgell from the year 819, a document actually written towards the end of the 10th century. It is also mentioned in the story of the monk Aimón about the transfer of the relics of Saint Vincent, around 863, where he explains how the delegation of monks from Castres who had gone to look for them in Zaragoza stopped at the church of Alp, then dedicated to Saint Mary. In later documents it always appears under the invocation of Saint Peter."
