The picturesque town of Vimperk, often called the gateway to Sumava or the town under Boubin Hill (
visit link) .
The name of the town derives from the German wimperg. In Gothic architecture, a wimperg is a gable topping over portals and windows and is also called a decorative gable. Outside of the immediate architecture, the wimperg also occurs as a motif in Gothic carving.
The dominant building of the Liberty Square is the Church of Our Lady of the Visitation. The town’s principal church is situated in the lower part of the square, was originally an early-Gothic structure, rebuilt in the Gothic style in the second half of the 14th century, and made into a late-Gothic double-nave church after 1500. Part of the precious interior dates back to the 15th century. Of particular interest is the St. Innocent reliquary, containing human remains dating probably from antiquity.
