Tribute to the 21 soldiers from the municipality of Bonares who participated in the 1898 war between Cuba and the Philippines against the United States.

"Of the Cuban and Philippine war, against the North American invaders, the highlight was undoubtedly the painful and sad situation, the repatriation of the poor soldiers defeated, injured or affected by these tropical diseases, in addition to anemia, malaria and the dysentery that caused so much havoc, much more than the enemy bullets and shrapnel.

These young people, after the painful military service, in a jungle unknown to them, semi-illiterates, most of them farm laborers, who were dismissed in the ports with marching bands and loud applause, return morally destroyed without hope, without any future. Just for not having the 1,500 pesetas, which it cost to pay the redemption to get rid of that damned thing for the Homeland, being only reserved for the wealthy and rich young people of the towns and cities."
