The North Esk is a river in eastern Scotland flowing 27 miles from the top of Glen Esk in the Grampian Mountains to eventually reach the North Sea four miles north of the Angus coastal town of Montrose.

The river begins at the top of the glen at the confluence of the Waters of Mark and Lee in remote country under craggy mountainsides and then flows down the glen in a wavy general south and east direction. It heads out of the glen at the Highland Boundary Fault passing the Rocks of Solitude and enters the fertile lowlands of Strathmore. Still heading in a general south-east direction, it skirts the villages of Edzell, Marykirk and Hillside, before an easterly course for the last two miles takes it into the North Sea, straddling the counties of Angus and Aberdeenshire (formerly Kincardineshire), which it has marked for the entire route since leaving the highlands, it being totally in Angus during its journey down Glen Esk.

The mouth of the river is at Montrose Bay dividing a long stretch of beach running north from the town. On the north (Aberdeenshire) side of the river, is the St Cyrus Nature Reserve.

The river is noted for its fishing (salmon and trout), and it hit the headlines in October 2023, when Storm Babet caused major flooding along the stretch from Marykirk to the sea along the flatter lands.

The co-ordinates are from the tip of land on the southern side of the mouth. Parking co-ordinates are at Kinnabar Woods just off the A92 road a mile to the south-west.
