"En relación a la fundación del Castillo existe controversia. Aunque se habla de que su establecimiento pudiera remontarse a época de dominación musulmana, cuando Palos de la Frontera se encontraba bajo la jurisdicción de Niebla, tanto fuentes arqueológicas como documentales han suscitado debate.
Documentalmente hablando la Villa palerma nace en el periodo de la Reconquista, cuando este término se encontraba en manos de los cristianos. Las fuentes documentales aportan que, en época de Alfonso XI de Castilla, fue donada una alquería a Don Alfonso Carro y Doña Berenguela Gómez, y que posteriormente en 1379, Palos de la Frontera es entregado por el rey Juan I de Castilla a Alvar Pérez de Guzmán que fundo la Villa y procedió a su posterior repoblación.
Lo que si es cierto es que tanto por las investigaciones de fuentes documentales como por las intervenciones arqueológicas, se establecen varios periodos de construcción del Castillo de Palos de la Frontera coincidiendo con el crecimiento demográfico y el desarrollo comercial que se daba en el Puerto Histórico:
El siglo XIII tuvo un carácter fundacional, en la que originalmente existía una torre primigenia de planta poligonal.
Se aprecia una ampliación en el siglo XIV con el añadido de tres torres más y un muro adosado a la torre primigenia, modificando ya su estructura a la apariencia de un Castillo.
Su momento álgido y últimas reformas se realizaron en el siglo XV, estructura que ha llegado hasta nuestros días. Posteriormente, se observa el abandono progresivo del inmueble en los siglos XVII-XVIII.
Estos estudios han revelado la estructuración del Castillo. Su planta podría haber tenido entre unos 27 x 22 m, de Norte-Sur y de Este-Oeste respectivamente.
Este Castillo, debe su origen y su pervivencia en el tiempo gracias a la estratégica posición de su Puerto, disfrutando de su mayor esplendor económico en el siglo XV debido al auge del comercio.
El Proyecto de Restauración se ha dividido en varias fases. En primer lugar se procedió a la recuperación de los restos del yacimiento arqueológico. Para ello, se realizó un exhaustivo estudio mediante fuentes históricas documentales donde se describe el Castillo, para poder realizar su posterior Restauración, Conservación y Puesta en Valor de la manera más fidedigna posible.
Actualmente, el Ayuntamiento de Palos de la Frontera, se encuentra trabajando en la consolidación de las laderas del cabezo y en el diseño del mirador y la torre del Homenaje."

These studies have revealed the structure of the Castle. Its plan could have been between about 27 x 22 m, North-South and East-West respectively.
This Castle owes its origin and its survival over time thanks to the strategic position of its Port, enjoying its greatest economic splendor in the 15th century due to the rise of trade.
The Restoration Project has been divided into several phases. Firstly, the remains of the archaeological site were recovered. To this end, an exhaustive study was carried out using historical documentary sources describing the Castle, in order to carry out its subsequent Restoration, Conservation and Enhancement in the most reliable way possible.
Currently, the Palos de la Frontera City Council is working on the consolidation of the slopes of the Cabezo and on the design of the viewpoint and the Homenaje tower."
