King Charles became king after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8th September 2022.

His coronation, when he was crowned, was held on 6 May 2023. At the age of 73, he became the oldest person to accede to the British throne, after having been the longest-serving heir apparent and Prince of Wales in British history.

His coronation was was celebrated throughout the UK and Durham County Council planted a number of oak trees in the county including this one in Wharton Park, a public park on high ground with good views of Durham Castle on high ground on the opposite side of the river Wear.
