The plaque reads " The hole in the wall is an inlet in the Detroit River located northwest of Bois Blanc Island. The passage is man-made, created when gaps were left in the Livingstone Channel dikes to allow boats to cross channels between Canada an the United States. the passage is said to have been used by rum runners crossing the international boundary by small craft or car (in winter).
The Livingstone Channel is named after William Livingstone, also known as "The man who shaped the Detroit River". the creation of this deep water channel was to speed shipping along the Great Lakes.
Construction took place from 1908 till 1912. Today shipping vessels can be seen using this channel daily."
