Minias was a Greek or Armenian merchant or nobleman who had served in the Roman army during the third century AD. After converting to Christianity, he decided to live as a hermit atop this hill outside of Florence. Around 250 AD, in a wave of persecution during the reign of Emperor Decius, he was beheaded. Venerated as a saint, a shrine was built on this same hill where his remains were interred and by the 8th century, a small chapel stood on this spot.

The current structure was built between the 11th and 13th centuries. The interior is lavishly decorated with frescoes and mosaics and its exterior façade is not unlike other churches in Florence with its bold geometric patterns. Situated at one of the highest points in Florence, there are wonderful views of the city from just outside the door. The church is also surrounded by a defensive wall built during the siege of Florence in 1553. This wall is not the dome of St. Peter’s in Rome but was originally designed (very hastily) by Michelangelo.
