Arthur Fiedler was born in Boston in 1894. His musical parents (his father played the violin and his mother played piano) had immigrated to the United States from Austria. When his father retired, the family moved back to Vienna, but Arthur Fiedler returned to Boston with the outbreak of World War I. The young Arthur got involved with the Boston Symphony orchestra, playing violin like his father. In the early 1920s, Fiedler created and conducted a chamber music orchestra with members of the Boston Symphony performing free outdoor concerts. This led to his being appointed conductor of the Boston Pops orchestra, normally a temporary position but Arthur Fiedler made a 50-year career out of it.

The Boston Pops orchestra was formed in 1885 and had had 17 different conductors prior to the appointment of Arthur Fiedler in 1930. Over the next fifty years, Fiedler, through the Boston Pops, strove to make classical music more accessible to a wider audience. He began a tradition of free concerts on the Charles River Esplanade, began including popular music along with the light classical music that the Pops was known for, and created more commercial recordings than any other orchestra in the world. He is also credited with establishing the annual Fourth of July concert and fireworks display on the Charles River.

In May of 1979, at the age of 84, Arthur Fiedler conducted the Boston Pops orchestra for the last time. It was his fiftieth season with the Pops. He died a couple of months later at his home in Brookline, MA. His cremated remains were interred at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury.
