The purpose of the Macungie Historical Society is to promote the discovery, collection, preservation, archive, display, interpretation, and publication of the history, historical records, culture, landmarks, artifacts, memorabilia, and data of, and relating to, the Borough of Macungie, originally called Millerstown, and its surrounding areas. It was incorporated in 1999.
The historical society runs events throughout the year, including the renowned Sheep Rock Hike, which begins before dawn every Thanksgiving. 2023's version will be the 95th event, which is a hike through the woods to the Sheep Rock, an outcrop where a farmer shielded his sheep from the elements one cold Thanksgiving morning.
