One of Oahu's most photogenic temples honored with new USPS stamp - News Article Locations on Waymarking.com

"Tucked away in the lush Valley of the Temples at the foot of the Koolau Mountains, the Byodo-In Temple stands as more than just a beautiful landmark: It represents a cultural and historic moment when the first Japanese immigrants arrived in Hawaii.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of construction of the Byodo-In, and to celebrate that, the U.S. Postal Service launched a new Priority Mail stamp Tuesday.

The stamp depicts a colorful illustration of the Byodo-In, a Buddhist temple that was built in 1968.

Built as a smaller-scale concrete replica of the original wooden Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Japan, the one in Hawaii was made to commemorate the centennial of the first Japanese immigrants to arrive in Hawaii.

"It is also a symbol of friendship between Japan and Hawaii," Carole Hayashino, Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii president said. "It's a tribute to King Kalakaua and the Kingdom of Hawaii for welcoming the Japanese immigrants on the go."
