"Las lluvias de los últimos días han terminado por sumir en la ruina la iglesia de San Sebastián de Montoro. El templo, ubicado en el barrio de la Silera y construido a finales del siglo XVI, ha quedado cerrado al culto "por riesgo de derrumbe hasta su arreglo", según ha informado este domingo en su perfil de Facebook la parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, de la que depende. El párroco Juan Vicente Ruiz Soria ha explicado que el servicio de arquitectura del Obispado ha confirmado la existencia de un hundimiento parcial del tejado, por lo que ha optado por cerrar el templo para evitar riesgos.
Los montoreños han asistido en los últimos años al declive de la estructura de esta ermita, que en los documentos aparece citada por primera vez en 1589. Tres años atrás, la estructura fue sometida a un tratamiento contra las termitas que resultó satisfactorio, y hace unas semanas un técnico constató que todo iba bien. Pero las goteras de las cubiertas han terminado por dañar la cubierta del edificio y las vigas de madera, hasta el punto de tener que cerrar al culto por el riesgo de que se produzcan desprendimientos.
En la iglesia de San Sebastián se han escrito muchas páginas del extenso libro de la historia montoreña. El edificio, por ejemplo, formó parte de la antigua enfermería en la que San Francisco Solano, patrón de Montilla, atendía a los apestados junto a Fray Buenaventura. Y es que, en 1583, la peste bubónica, popularmente conocida como peste negra, asoló la ciudad del Alto Guadalquivir.
Desde el punto de vista arquitectónico, San Sebastián es una iglesia gótica-mudéjar de planta basilical, con reformas y añadidos de los siglos XVII y XVIII. En el conjunto sobresalen elementos realizados en piedra molinaza típica del casco antiguo de Montoro, como las cornisas, los paramentos y otras partes que ahora se encuentran tapadas por la cal. El interior, cerrado, lo conforman tres naves con cabecera plana en la que se ubican la sacristía, la capilla del Sagrario y el altar principal, que preside la Virgen de las Angustias.
El templo también tiene un gran protagonismo en la Semana Santa, que ahora opta a la declaración como Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional. En la tarde del Viernes Santo, aquí inician su estación de penitencia las imágenes titulares de la Cofradía del Cristo de la Misericordia y las Angustias, así como el Santo Sepulcro. Las Angustias, de Pío Mollar, solo conservan una mano de la antigua talla, destruida en la Guerra Civil. Las imágenes serán trasladadas el viernes 13 de diciembre a la parroquia del Carmen, mientras que la misa del miércoles será a las 09:00 también en el Carmen".

The building, for example, was part of the old infirmary in which San Francisco Solano, patron saint of Montilla, cared for the plagued along with Fray Buenaventura. And in 1583, the bubonic plague, popularly known as the Black Death, devastated the city of Alto Guadalquivir.
From an architectural point of view, San Sebastián is a Gothic-Mudejar church with a basilica plan, with renovations and additions from the 17th and 18th centuries. In the complex, elements made of millstone typical of the old town of Montoro stand out, such as the cornices, the walls and other parts that are now covered by lime. The closed interior is made up of three naves with a flat head in which the sacristy, the Tabernacle chapel and the main altar are located, presided over by the Virgin of Angustias.
The temple also has a great role in Holy Week, which is now eligible for declaration as a Festival of National Tourist Interest. On the afternoon of Good Friday, the titular images of the Brotherhood of Christ of Mercy and Anguish, as well as the Holy Sepulchre, begin their season of penance here. The Angustias, by Pío Mollar, only preserve one hand of the old carving, destroyed in the Civil War. The images will be transferred on Friday, December 13 to the parish of Carmen, while the mass on Wednesday will be at 9:00 also in Carmen."
