Hundreds of millions of dollars were needed to clean this site. The coordinates listed are for the top of the containment "bunker". This is now one of the highest points in St. Charles County, the view from the top is fantastic. There are four informational plaques in viewing area on the top. The area is open only during daylight hours. Access to the top is restricted when weather conditions make it unsafe. There is an interpretive center on site to learn more about this superfund project.
The containment area actually is for two separate Superfund Sites:
Weldon Spring Quarry/Plant/Pits (USDOE/ARMY) EPA Id# MO3210090004 with 521,000 cubic yards of soil or other solid-based media (see glossary) have been treated, stabilized, or removed (roughly equivalent to 97 and a half football fields, covered 1 yard deep) . 900,104,000 gallons of water or other liquid-based media have been treated, stabilized, or removed (roughly equivalent to 15 supertankers). The list of contaminates for this site is very expansive numbering over a hundred.
The smaller Weldon Spring Former Army Ordnance Works EPA Id# MO5210021288 with 50,452 cubic yards of soil or other solid-based media have been treated, stabilized, or removed (roughly equivalent to 9 and a half football fields, covered 1 yard deep).
