POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. (WV News) — Shoppers on Main Street in Point Pleasant have a new shop to explore with the opening of Brown’s Corner last weekend. The shop specializes in comic books, cards and other pop-culture rarities.

After years of buying comics and cards at conventions, Brown’s Corner owner Toby Brown told his girlfriend “we should have this in our own back yard.”

Brown began selling items from his collection as a guest vendor at conventions near and far, and also locally at the Gallipolis Fairgrounds. His goal was always to open his own shop in downtown Point Pleasant.

Small business ownership runs in the family, as Brown’s great-grandfather was the founder of “Carl’s Shoe Store” in Gallipolis. Brown’s family operated the store for 42 years, and he started working there himself as a youth. That was around the same time he started reading comic books.

“Most of the stories they wanted us to read in school weren’t as interesting as superheroes fighting villains,” Brown said.

Brown recalls selecting comics from the old-fashioned spinner racks at local pharmacies and markets. He also had a seventh-grade teacher who would order his favorite comics for him directly from a distributor.

He finally stopped collecting when he started college, saying that “it just wasn’t cool then, not like it is now.”

He finally returned to the hobby five years ago.

“I missed the stories and the collectible aspect of it,” Brown said.

This isn’t Brown’s first foray into small business ownership on his own, as he previously owned a card shop and a pool hall in Gallipolis.

Brown’s Corner launched last Friday with an opening weekend sale and a drawing for a special prize. Brown gets assistance at his new store from his mom, Jan Brown.

The store has a wide selection of both new comics and back issues from decades past. There is also a wide assortment of sports and fantasy cards. They also boast a big selection of the popular “Funko Pops.”

Brown is hopeful that the continued popularity of comic book-based movies, television shows and video games will have a positive effect on his store.

“I think that’s had an impact,” he said.

Industry analysts believe the comic book store industry has successfully bounced back from the crisis caused by the worldwide pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

Brown’s Corner is located at 500 Main St. in Point Pleasant.
