"El complejo, formado por iglesia y monasterio, edificado por las Benedictinas en 1393 en la orilla meridional del río Arno, es actualmente propiedad privada y surge en parte de un área llamada en la Baja Edad Media tegularia, por la presencia de hornos de ladrillo y de cerámica, atestiguados también por algunos hallazgos arqueológicos en el interior del monasterio. El edificio sufrió drásticas reestructuraciones en el siglo XVI, tras el paso de las monjas a la Orden de San Esteban (1565), y también en el siglo XVII, que dieron lugar a la simplísima fachada que da a la Plaza S. Paolo a Ripa d'Arno y al campanario cuadrangular cubierto con pirámide.
En las obras de 1643 se destruyeron casi totalmente los frescos del siglo XV de Benozzo Gozzoli, que representaban Historias de San Benedicto, de los cuales un fragmento aislado se conserva en la sede central de la Cassa di Risparmio di Pisa, en Plaza Dante.
En cambio, la actual fachada neogótica es fruto del trabajo de reproyección del revestimiento de la fachada a lo largo del río, realizado en 1850 por el arquitecto Domenico Santini, que estudió su partición en tres edículos de color rojo oscuro, conectados por dos paramentos de tierra amarilla, ambos decorados con elementos de barro. El uso de ventanas en estilo “gótico llameante” representa una novedad para la tradición arquitectónica pisana. La intervención de Santini tuvo un carácter más estético que funcional, dado que las propias monjas habían hecho restaurar el edifico a su propio coste, apenas en 1814, condición que les había sido impuesta por Fernando de Lorena para mantener la posesión del mismo. Los altares, desmontados en 1889, se conservan actualmente en la iglesia parroquial de Navacchio."
