En Pompeya la mayoría de paredes y calles de piedra están adornadas con penes. Están por todos lados: carreteras, paredes, puertas y hornos.
La historia que los guías le suelen contar a los visitantes es que son una de las primeras formas de publicidad conocidas. Según estas versiones, los falos sirven como flechas, y si sigues las flechas, terminarás en uno de los muchos burdeles de la ciudad.
