Markinch is a small town in the centre of Fife in Scotland is has been almost conjoined on its western side by the new town of Glenrothes, built in the 1960s.

The war memorial commemorating the 85 men from the town and surrounding district, stands on the south side of Balbirnie Street near the town centre in a grassed area.

The memorial was unveiled on November 20th 1920, and was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and built by William Davidson. It is of ashlar sandstone and is a two stage columnar inside a crenellated enclosure.

The main north face on the first stage features a carved relief of St George and the dragon and the following inscription:

'TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM MARKINCH AND DISTRICT WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918'

The rear south face features a carved relief of St Drostan and underneath an added panel of the 30 men and women lost during WWII.

The second stage features a carved shield on each face along with a carved relief of the old parish church on the south face, a knight on horseback on the west face, a saltire on the east face, and a thistle and crown on the north face. The column is topped with a cross finial.

On the crenellated enclosure are four bronze plaques in a circular formation giving the names, ranks and units:
