The Greers Ferry Dam was constructed from March 1959 to December 1962. The lake serves the Heber Springs area for flood control and is a site for recreation and power generation. President John F. Kennedy was present for the dedication, just six weeks before he was assassinated in Dallas. This memorial overlook is named in his honor. From here visitors have a splendid view of the dam and hydroelectric station, downstream Little Red River, and the reservoir northeast of the dam.
