The Greers Ferry Dam was constructed from March 1959 to December 1962. President John F. Kennedy was present for the dedication, just six weeks before he was assassinated in Dallas. The lake serves the Heber Springs area for flood control and is a site for recreation and power generation. The foundation rock under the dam is a hard, fine grained, shaly sandstone belonging to the Atoka formation. Engineers used rotary Calyx drills to obtain over 300 feet of core samples of this rock. In addition, geologists explored the deep core holes to map features such as bedding plates, fractures, cavities, and water inflow. This core is on display at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Overlook.
