Los mosaicos son diseños e imágenes creados con pequeños trozos (teselas) de piedra u otros materiales que se han utilizado para decorar suelos, paredes, techos y objetos preciosos desde antes de que existieran registros escritos. Al igual que la cerámica, los mosaicos rara vez han tentado a los saqueadores, por lo que suelen encontrarse en lugares donde todo lo demás ha desaparecido hace tiempo. Desde la antigua Mesopotamia hasta Mesoamérica, los mosaicos no solo revelan el arte de las civilizaciones, sino que también proporcionan una visión inestimable de cómo vestían, comían y lucían los pueblos antiguos. Podemos ver dioses, mitos, prácticas rituales, actividades deportivas, técnicas agrícolas, arquitectura, transporte, armas y herramientas. Incluso podemos ver cómo era el mundo en otro tiempo y vislumbrar paisajes, flora y fauna ahora perdidos. Como es imposible hacer un breve repaso de todos los mosaicos producidos en todas las culturas del mundo, aquí solo veremos algunos ejemplos de culturas y algunas de sus obras más célebres con la técnica del mosaico.
En el Ayuntamiento de Villanueva del Trabuco, quisieron plasmar el escudo heráldico de la ciudad en esta antigua tecnica, en la fachada principal hay dos Mosaicos, el escudo y un hermoso escudo de Andalucía, representado por Hercules y dos Leones a cada lateral del mismo.

Mosaics are designs and images created with small pieces (tesserae) of stone or other materials that have been used to decorate floors, walls, ceilings, and precious objects since before written records existed. Like pottery, mosaics have rarely tempted looters, so they are often found in places where everything else has long since disappeared. From ancient Mesopotamia to Mesoamerica, mosaics not only reveal the art of civilizations, but also provide invaluable insight into how ancient people dressed, ate and looked. We can see gods, myths, ritual practices, sports activities, agricultural techniques, architecture, transportation, weapons and tools. We can even see what the world once was like and glimpse now-lost landscapes, flora and fauna. As it is impossible to make a brief review of all the mosaics produced in all the cultures of the world, here we will only see some examples of cultures and some of their most famous works using the mosaic technique.
In the Town Hall of Villanueva del Trabuco, they wanted to capture the heraldic shield of the city in this ancient technique, on the main façade there are two Mosaics, the shield and a beautiful shield of Andalusia, represented by Hercules and two Lions on each side of it.
