Built by the Lima Locomotive Works, this Shay type steam locomotive was delivered to the Security Logging Company of Carnation, Washington in January of 1924. Though not much on speed (this one had a maximum speed of 16 mph), Shays were the preferred workhorse of the logging industry since their increased tractive force could effortlessly move loads of logs over the often steep and winding grades of forest railroads.

In the early 1940s, after changing hands multiple times, this locomotive was acquired by Long-Bell Lumber whence it was retired in 1955 and donated to the city of Longview. The engine was placed on display, facing west, in a small park near the town square. There it sat for over forty years, exposed to the elements, neglected and becoming badly deteriorated.

In 1998, a major restoration effort was begun which took 15 years to complete. When the locomotive was finally returned to the park in 2013, it was repositioned facing east so that the ‘business’ side of the Shay would face the main street. Recently, however, the town hung a banner on the locomotive which covers the cylinders, somewhat defeating that purpose. You can still see the patented Lima crankshaft bracket and the characteristic bevel gears.
