"Durante 17 años la escultura en honor a San Luis Beltrán -que preside una fuente y una plaza que lleva el mismo nombre- estuvo guardada en las dependencias municipales debido a un acto vandálico tras el que la estatuilla resultó mutilada. Ocurrió en 1966 -el mismo año de su inauguración- aunque en 1983 (año del IV centenario de la muerte del santo valenciano) el ayuntamiento la repuso.
Desde entonces, ni la fuente ni la escultura había sufrido percance alguno. Hasta ayer. A las 10 horas, el vigilante del Almudín dio aviso a la policía local. La escultura y la fuente del santo estaban destrozadas. Los agentes se personaron en la plaza y encontraron fragmentos de la escultura y la fuente esparcidos por toda la zona. La mano del santo -que sujeta un crucifijo- apareció dentro de uno de los maceteros que decoran la plaza. La policía local reunió todos los fragmentos y los trasladó hasta el Almudín, donde permanecen custodiados a la espera de que que el departamento de Patrimonio del ayuntamiento decida qué medidas adoptar.
De los supuestos autores de este hecho -que constituye un delito- nada se sabe aunque la policía científica busca huellas dactilares y revisa las cámaras de vigilancia del Almudín."

"For 17 years the sculpture in honor of San Luis Beltrán - which presides over a fountain and a square that bears the same name - was kept in the municipal offices due to an act of vandalism after which the statuette was mutilated. It occurred in 1966 - the same year of its inauguration - although in 1983 (year of the IV centenary of the death of the Valencian saint) the city council replaced it.
Since then, neither the fountain nor the sculpture had suffered any mishap. Until yesterday. At 10 a.m., the Almudín security guard notified the local police. The sculpture and fountain of the saint were destroyed. The agents appeared in the square and found fragments of the sculpture and the fountain scattered throughout the area. The saint's hand - holding a crucifix - appeared inside one of the flower pots that decorate the square. The local police gathered all the fragments and moved them to Almudín, where they remain under guard waiting for the City Hall's Heritage Department to decide what measures to adopt.
"Nothing is known about the alleged perpetrators of this act - which constitutes a crime - although the scientific police are looking for fingerprints and reviewing the Almudín surveillance cameras."
