"Llamado de serranos por encontrarse frente a la puerta del mismo nombre y ser esta por la que entraban los viajeros procedentes de la comarca de los Serranos. En época musulmana la puerta recibía el nombre de Al-Qántara (el puente) y en época cristiana se le denominaba de Roteros o Serranos, siendo esta última la que acabó por prevalecer.

Los sucesivos puentes que se construyeron ya fueran de madera o de mampostería eran arruinados por las sucesivas riadas del Turia, en 1517 una terrible avenida de agua se llevó por delante el puente, es cuando los jurados de la ciudad y la fábrica de murs i valls (muros y fosos) acuerdan la construcción de un nuevo puente totalmente en piedra. Su artífice fue Juan Bautista Corbera (pedrapiquer y mestre de la ciutat) que comenzó los trabajos en 1518, prolongándose las obras hasta mediados de siglo. Es el segundo puente en antigüedad después del puente de La Trinidad."
