POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. (WV News) — A new addition is being added above the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant. Museum owner Jeff Wamsley said work is underway in creating the attraction “Escape Room 66.

Wamsley said “Escape Room 66” will actually consist of three rooms. The attraction aims to immerse visitors in an investigative challenge, with the premise being that a Mothman investigator has gone missing in the “TNT” area of Point Pleasant.

Visitors will be invited to scour the three rooms for clues in an attempt to locate and rescue the lost subject. One of the rooms recreates the office of famed Mothman chronicler Mary Hyre of The Athens Messenger.

During the Mothman sightings in Point Pleasant, Hyre would often report on the odd occurrences in her newspaper column called “Where the Waters Mingle.” As a result, author John Keel sought her out, and Hyre and he became associated together out of mutual interest in the subject.

Hyre helped with Keel’s investigations and kept him updated through correspondence. She claimed to have seen the weird lights in the sky on several occasions and even claimed to have been visited by mysterious government agents.

In addition to her reporting, Hyre also managed The Messenger’s Point Pleasant office on Sixth Street.

In 1975, Keel dedicated his book “The Mothman Prophecies” to “Mary Hyre and the people of West Virginia.”

Wamsley hopes to open “Escape Room 66” in late summer or early fall.

“We want to make sure it’s done right,” Wamsley said.

He said a nine-hole immersive blacklight golf experience is also being constructed next door above the Point Pleasant Trading Co.

Meanwhile, this year’s Mothman Festival is scheduled for Sept. 16 and 17. Wamsley said announcements will be coming soon.
