American realist painter Andrew Wyeth basically operated out of two locations: his family’s home of Chadds Ford, PA, and a summer home in Cushing, Maine. At both of these locations, Wyeth befriended a local family and used their home and environs for subject matter. In Chadds Ford, it was the Kuerner Farm, and in Maine, it was the home of Alvaro and Christina Olson.

Christina Olson suffered from some kind of degenerative disease which left her paralyzed from the waist down since her twenties. She stubbornly refused to use a wheelchair and got around by crawling. Wyeth painted several portraits of Christina but this one was her favorite. In spite of being named ‘Christina’s World,’ Wyeth actually used his wife Betsy as the model. The painting depicts a real scene outside the Olson house in Maine.

The stamp was one of a set of twelve issued on what would have been Andrew Wyeth’s 100th birthday: July 12, 2017.
