Foto 6: Fervenza do Pombar, río Quiroga.
Foto 7: Fervenza de Vieiros, río Selmo.

Eiquí podedes atopar as razóns que levaron á creación deste Xeoparque.

[EN] In 2019, the Courel Mountains were recognized as a Geopark by Unesco. It is a widely known territory for me because my family home is on the outskirts, just 15 km in a straight line from this viewpoint and there are many walks accumulated in my boots through this territory.

In an area of just over 577 km2 we can see and study the geological history and how the population has been related to it for more than 4000 years. Gold exploitation that dates back to the time of the Romans who left their mark on us, for example, in the Montefurado Tunnel or in the Margaride mines. In the 20th century, it was the slate mines that marked the economy of the area.

Several rivers and streams make up this landscape: Quioga, Lor, Selmo,... forming pronounced valleys with a multitude of waterfalls that also give us a lesson in geology.

These are the locations I show:

Photos 1 to 3: Campodola Lookout, for me with great sentimental importance because in 2004, newly inaugurated as a lookout years before the creation of the Geopark, I visited it for the first time in the company of my father, who died in 2005, and coming back here brings me pleasant memories. From here we can admire the Campodola-Leixazós Fold (photo 4).
Photo 5: Geological Museum located in Quiroga.
Photo 6: Pombar waterfall, Quiroga river.
Photo 7: Vieiros waterfall, Selmo river.

Here you can find the reasons that led to the creation of this Geopark.
