The House of the Faun, built during the 2nd century BC. C., it was one of the largest and most impressive Roman residences in Pompeii, in Italy. Buried during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79, it housed many works of art inside and is one of the most luxurious aristocratic domus of the Roman Republic. The house reflects this period more faithfully than other archaeological remains found, even in Rome itself. It owes its name to a bronze statue representing a faun, found in one of its atriums. It occupies almost completely the Insula 12 of the Regio VI of the city.

The first construction of the house dates back to the 3rd century BC. C., with smaller dimensions than the current house and a large orchard that occupied up to the height of the first peristyle. Around 120 BC. C., during the Samnitic period, the house was completely rebuilt and expanded, taking advantage of the plots of other neighboring houses and raising the pavement by approximately one meter. One of the main works was the construction of a second peristyle, the final total extension being 2,970 square meters. The decision to have a house with large atriums and peristyles and few rooms and rooms for service was due to the fact that the owner wanted to display all his wealth and power.
