El Palacio de Villene, que actualmente acoge al Ayuntamiento de Villena, en la fachada dispone de un escudo de piedra de la ciudad de Villena.

Una de las descripciones más antiguas del escudo de Villena es la siguiente, que se encuentra en la Relación enviada a Felipe II en 1575:
"Y esta çiudad tiene por armas un escudo con un leon a la parte derecha, e a la izquierda, una ala con una espada y en medio, un castillo sobre una peña, y debaxo dellas, tres pinos. Estas quedaron en algunas obras y edifiçios antiguos, que pareçe se hizieron en tienpo del ynfante don Juan Manuel, cuyas fueron dichas ynsignias de armas."

El león y la mano alada (Manu-ala) son herencia del infante Don Manuel, primer señor de la entonces villa. El castillo recuerda su pertenencia histórica a la Corona de Castilla, mientras que los tres pinos y el estanque hacen referencia a la laguna de Villena, su mayor fuente de riqueza. La corona, tradicionalmente interpretada como de infante o ducal según las fuentes,? se interpreta actualmente como corona real abierta de acuerdo con la ley valenciana.

The Villene Palace, which currently houses the Villena Town Hall, has a stone coat of arms of the city of Villena on the façade.

One of the oldest descriptions of the Villena coat of arms is the following, found in the Relación sent to Felipe II in 1575:
"And this city has for arms a shield with a lion on the right side, and on the left, a wing with a sword and in the middle, a castle on a rock, and below them, three pine trees. These were left in some works and buildings ancient, which seems to have been made in the time of the infant Don Juan Manuel, whose emblems were said to be of arms."

The lion and the winged hand (Manu-ala) are the inheritance of the infant Don Manuel, first lord of the then town. The castle recalls its historical belonging to the Crown of Castile, while the three pine trees and the pond refer to the Villena lagoon, its greatest source of wealth. The crown, traditionally interpreted as infant or ducal depending on the sources, is currently interpreted as an open royal crown in accordance with Valencian law.
