"The castle of Sax stands at 524 meters above sea level on a steep rock that dominates Sax (Alicante, Spain) and dominates a large part of the Vinalopó valley between Elda and Villena.
The oldest vestiges found in the Peña del Castillo are Iberian and Roman, although the origin of the current fortress is Andalusian, probably Almohad.
It is one of the three great fortresses of Alto Vinalopó, together with those of Villena and Biar, and was part of the defensive line of fortifications.
Ramón Folch Viscount of Cardona tried to conquer it, without success, already in 1239, but it was the knights of the Order of Calatrava, commanded by the Commander of Alcañiz, who took it at the end of that year. Its possession was transferred to Alfonso X of Castile, because it is territory that the agreements had assigned to the Castilian domination. It was integrated into the lordship of Villena, until in 1480 it was incorporated into the Crown by the Catholic Monarchs.

During the war of succession the garrison of the castle was attached to Felipe de Anjou; besieged by the troops of Archduke Carlos of Austria, they withdrew from the fortress. In 1764 Carlos III appointed the Duke of Arcos as mayor of the castle. In 1782 it passed to the Duke of Maqueda.
It has been municipal property since 1980 and is currently fully restored.
The castle stands on an elongated hill, inaccessible from the western slope, so the fortress is accessed from the northwest. It has an irregular floor plan and consists of two enclosures: the outer barbican, for the defense of bridges and entrances , and a large walled body, within which there was a large shelter.
At its ends are the two towers, the main one being rectangular, with walls up to 2 meters thick; inside was the weapons room, and above it a crenellated terrace that was accessed by a staircase with pointed arches.
The first and second floors have a pointed half-barrel vault, with arrow slits in the latter and in the third. On the slope of the cliff on which this fortification sits, there were other defense works intended to protect the main access to the castle, where the main door opened.

There was a drawbridge as access to the keep, which today has disappeared. Next to the tower there is a large cistern with one of its sides. It is believed that its current factory dates from the 14th century, the oldest part being the northern area, and the most modern the keep.
A couple of years ago they put some stairs to go up to visit it on the side that has the rock.
