"El Palacio-Fortaleza del Marqués de Dos Aguas de Onil, Alicante, se encuentra situado en pleno centro de la ciudad. Está en la Plaza Mayor donde, hoy en día, se encuentra ubicado el Ayuntamiento de Onil.
Este Palacio, con características de fortaleza, se empezó a construir en el 1539, según indican varias investigaciones, y se terminó en el 1614. Su estilo es gótico renacentista y su nombre siempre lleva a confusión.
El motivo de la construcción de un Palacio-Fortaleza, en lugar de un Palacio-Señorial, fue motivado por una posible defensa de la parte sur del Reino de Valencia. Por razones de seguridad y confort, los Señores de esta Villa abandonaron la residencia en el Castillo de Castalla, situado en lo alto de un cerro de la vecina localidad. A continuación construyeron esta fortificación en la Villa de Onil, como su mansión señorial adaptada a las distintas necesidades residenciales de la época.
Otros autores indican que la decisión de construir esta fortaleza puede que fuera consecuencia del saqueo de la población en 1521. En esa época tuvo lugar la guerra de las Germanías, por parte de tropas de agermanados.
Los elementos más llamativos de este Palacio-Fortaleza son la fosa exterior, que cuenta con una entrada al claustro interior y en la que se encontraba la cárcel señorial. Las habitaciones del interior son de bóvedas y las ventanas tienen pedestales, pero está sin acabar como muchos de los arcos del claustro.
El resto del edificio cuenta con plantas muy grandes y techos de madera, pero la artesanía está en bruto, no hay detalles ni grandes elementos muy elaborados. Para terminar el Palacio cuenta con tres torres, siendo la cuarta la del campanario de la Iglesia Parroquial. La fachada sur está parcialmente enlucida y se ha sometido a algunas intervenciones de reforma. Una vez realizadas, el edificio se adaptó a las necesidades de la parroquia, construida en 1788.
El Palacio cuenta con varias características que lo califican de Fortaleza. Un ejemplo serían sus torres almenadas con orificios de troneras o saetas. En una de estas torres se puede ver el escudo nobiliario del Marqués de Dos Aguas y, en otra de ellas, una gárgola en lo más alto de la torre.
Las visitas al Palacio-Fortaleza son libres, pero es necesario pasar previamente por la Oficina de Turismo de Onil."

"The Palace-Fortress of the Marqués de Dos Aguas de Onil, Alicante, is located in the heart of the city. It is in the Plaza Mayor where, today, the Onil City Hall is located.
This Palace, with characteristics of a fortress, began to be built in 1539, according to several investigations, and it was finished in 1614. Its style is Gothic-Renaissance and its name always leads to confusion.
The reason for the construction of a Palace-Fortress, instead of a Palace-Manor, was motivated by a possible defense of the southern part of the Kingdom of Valencia. For reasons of security and comfort, the Lords of this Villa abandoned their residence in Castalla Castle, located on top of a hill in the neighboring town. They then built this fortification in the Villa de Onil, as their stately mansion adapted to the different residential needs of the time.
Other authors indicate that the decision to build this fortress may have been a consequence of the sacking of the town in 1521. At that time the war of the Germanías took place, by German troops.
The most striking elements of this Palace-Fortress are the outer moat, which has an entrance to the inner cloister and where the stately jail was located. The interior rooms are vaulted and the windows have pedestals, but it is unfinished like many of the cloister arches.
The rest of the building has very large floors and wooden ceilings, but the craftsmanship is raw, there are no elaborate details or large elements. To finish, the Palace has three towers, the fourth being the bell tower of the Parish Church. The south façade is partially plastered and has undergone some reform interventions. Once completed, the building was adapted to the needs of the parish, built in 1788.
The Palace has several characteristics that qualify it as a Fortress. An example would be its crenellated towers with loopholes or bolt holes. In one of these towers you can see the noble shield of the Marqués de Dos Aguas and, in another of them, a gargoyle at the top of the tower.
Visits to the Palace-Fortress are free, but it is necessary to go through the Onil Tourist Office beforehand."
