PERSON
"Abdoulaye Wade About this sound pronunciation (Kébémer; May 29, 1926) is a Senegalese politician, was the third president of Senegal. He is the leader of the Senegalese Democratic Party, a liberal party member of the Liberal International. Before coming to government, he led the opposition for decades, and was sometimes exiled and imprisoned in Besançon for his political activities. He studied at the Lycée Condorcet.

Wade ran for president for the first time in February 1978 against Senegal's first president, Léopold Sédar Senghor, winning 17.38% of the vote, but not enough to overtake Senghor. Consequently, he ran for president in the 1983, 1988, and 1993 elections, always coming second to Senghor's successor, Abdou Diouf. In February 2000, he again came second with 31%, but Diouf did not get a majority, so a runoff was held on March 19. Abdoulaye Wade won with 58.49% of the vote and was sworn in as president on April 1, 2000. He was re-elected in the February 25, 2007 presidential election with a 55.86% victory in the first round.

In the 2012 elections he won the first round victory with 35% of the vote, while his former ally and opposition leader Macky Sall obtained 24%. In the second round held on March 24 Sall was favored with 65% while Wade had only 35%. Sall took office on April 2."
