"Muro de Alcoy is a municipality in the Valencian Community, Spain. It is located in the north of the province of Alicante, integrated into the Cocentaina County region, it is located 75 kilometers from the provincial capital. The municipal term is crossed by the Mediterranean highway.
The relief of the municipality is defined by the main depression of the prebetic valleys of Alcoy, together with the Mariola and Benicadell mountains.
Already in the 16th century, Muro became the first town in the valley, after Cocentaina, since in 1520 Muro had 330 houses and about 1,500 inhabitants, Turballos 40 and 160 inhabitants, Cela and Benámer 12 houses each with 50 and 25 inhabitants respectively and 6 houses in L'Alqueria dels Capellans, mostly Moorish.
In 1574 the church of Muro was erected as a parish and in 1584, Jimén Pérez Rois de Corella y Mendoza, VI Count of Cocentaina, granted the town of Muro the privilege of university, separate from that of Cocentaina.
In 1706 Muro acquired the title of town. During the Succession War, she was in favor of Archduke Carlos. Muro was part of the governorate of Játiva (del Júcar) until 1707, from then until 1833 it remained incorporated into the governorate of Alcoy. At the end of the 19th century, Muro del Alcoy absorbed the small municipality of Cela de Núñez into its term (with 540 inhabitants in 1860, compared to 2,946 in Muro).
The official place name is that of Muro de Alcoy. The "Alcoy" extension occurred in 1916 as a result of the confusion of the different Walls in Spain. Documentation from the time shows that the place name was renamed "del Alcoy", not "de Alcoy", because there were many towns that repeated its name. The nickname "del Alcoy" referred to the Alcoy or Serpis River because "words that express the name of a stream, mountain or territory" had to be attached.
MURO ??DE ALCOY TOWN HALL is a LOCAL CORPORATION that brings together 9,315 inhabitants, with an income per inhabitant of €958.67 and an unemployment rate of 13,346%."
