El primer monasterio de las agustinas descalzas fue fundado por el obispo de valencia, Juan de Ribera, en la localidad de Alcoy, España, en 1597. Al inicio, el prelado pretendía un monasterio de carmelitas descalzas, pero al no haber podido hacerlo, llamó un grupo de canonesa de San Agustín y dio vida al primero monasterio de agustinas descalzas. De este primer grupo resalta la figura de Dorotea Torrella Escrivana, considerada la cofundadora de la orden. La fecha de fundación corresponde al año de la profesión religiosa de las primeras agustinas descalzas del monasterio de Alcoy.
Luego del Concilio Vaticano II, a causa de las crisis de vocaciones que afectaron a la mayoría de los institutos religiosos, las Agustinas descalzas han tenido que ir cerrando sus monasterios. Los últimos en hacerlo fueron los de Valencia (2009) y Alcoy (2013).
El Monasterio del Santo Sepulcro de Alcoy (Alicante), Comunidad Valenciana, es la única muestra de arquitectura religiosa antigua que se conserva en Alcoy, ya que todas las otras han desaparecido. Se trata de un templo barroco construido entre 1596 y 1598 por los maestros de obras Baltasar García, Honorato de Onteniente y Baptista Balfago.

The first monastery of the Discalced Augustinians was founded by the Bishop of Valencia, Juan de Ribera, in the town of Alcoy, Spain, in 1597. At first, the prelate wanted a monastery of Discalced Carmelites, but since he was unable to do so, he called a group of canoness from San Agustín and gave life to the first monastery of Discalced Augustinian nuns. Of this first group, the figure of Dorotea Torrella Escrivana stands out, considered the co-founder of the order. The foundation date corresponds to the year of the religious profession of the first Discalced Augustinians of the Alcoy Monastery.
After the Second Vatican Council, due to the vocations crisis that affected most of the religious institutes, the Discalced Augustinians have had to gradually close their monasteries. The last to do so were those of Valencia (2009) and Alcoy (2013).
The Monastery of the Holy Sepulcher of Alcoy (Alicante), Valencian Community, is the only example of ancient religious architecture that is preserved in Alcoy, since all the others have disappeared. It is a Baroque temple built between 1596 and 1598 by the master builders Baltasar García, Honorato de Onteniente and Baptista Balfago.
