Life along the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is as beautiful as it is diverse. Stretching 3,000 miles along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States, sections of the Intracoastal Waterway consist of natural inlets, saltwater rivers, bays and sounds, while others are artificial canals. It provides a navigable route along its length without hazards of travel on the open sea. In Northeast Florida, the ICW channel cuts through a wide array of coastal scrub, maritime hammock, estuary and salt marsh, each containing its own special diverse population of plants and animals. These coastal organisms have adapted to the challenges of intense sun, salt spray, tides, storm surges and currents. Whether walking by land or kayaking the ICW is worth the time to explore.
