NL De Sint-Niklaaskerk is een rooms-katholieke kerk in de Belgische stad Veurne.

Geschiedenis

Het exacte tijdstip van oprichting is niet bekend, maar het bestond al in de 12e eeuw toen Jean I van Warneton, bisschop van Thérouanne, het afstond aan de abdij van Saint Nicolas die hij net had gesticht. De kerk deed dienst als parochiekerk en werd bediend door een monnik van de abdij totdat de abdij werd opgeheven. Daarna werd het de kerk van het decanaat van Veurne.

De westelijke toren is 48 meter hoog en had oorspronkelijk een stenen torenspits. Na 1843 kreeg het een nieuwe bakstenen torenspits die in 1866 werd afgebroken. Het zal nooit meer worden herbouwd, maar de afgeknotte vorm blijft behouden. De oudste klok van Veurne, t Bommetje genaamd (in het Frans de gebombardeerde), dateert uit 1379 en maakt deel uit van deze beiaard.

Van de oorspronkelijke kerk is alleen het onderste deel van de toren, aan de westzijde, overgebleven. Dit oude portaal toont Christus in het midden, geflankeerd door de Maagd Maria en de apostel Johannes. De eerste vermeldingen van verbouwingen dateren uit 1439. In 1494 werd het gebouw volledig gesloopt en herbouwd. In 1775 werd het middenkoor naar het oosten uitgebreid. In de 19e eeuw leidden interieurrenovaties tot de verwijdering van negen altaren en de meeste beelden.

Binnenin staat een witmarmeren beeld van Sinterklaas, gemaakt door Philippe Parmentier.

L'époque exacte de sa fondation est inconnue, mais elle existait déjà au XIIe siècle puisque Jean Ier de Warneton, évêque de Thérouanne, la céda à l'Abbaye de Saint Nicolas qu'il venait de fonder. L'église servait d'église paroissiale et était desservie par un moine de l'abbaye jusqu'à la dissolution de l'abbaye. Elle est ensuite devenue l'église du doyenné de Furnes.

La tour ouest mesure 48 m de haut et avait à l'origine une flèche en pierre. Après 1843, elle fut dotée d'une nouvelle flèche en brique qui fut démolie en 1866. Elle ne sera jamais reconstruite mais sa forme tronquée est préservée. La plus ancienne cloche de Furnes, appelée t Bommetje (en français la bombée), date de 1379 et fait partie de ce carillon.

Il ne reste de l'église d'origine que la partie inférieure de la tour, côté ouest. Cet ancien portail présente le Christ au centre, flanqué de la Vierge Marie et de l'apôtre Jean. Les premières mentions de rénovations datent de 1439. En 1494, l'édifice est entièrement démoli et reconstruit. En 1775, le chœur central est agrandi vers l'est. Au XIXe siècle, des rénovations intérieures entrainent la suppression de neufs autels ainsi que de la plupart des statues.

À l'intérieur se trouve une statue en marbre blanc représentant Saint-Nicolas réalisée par Philippe Parmentier.

History

The exact time of its foundation is unknown, but it already existed in the 12th century when Jean I of Warneton, bishop of Thérouanne, ceded it to the Abbey of Saint Nicolas which he had just founded. The church served as a parish church and was served by a monk from the abbey until the abbey was dissolved. It then became the church of the deanery of Veurne.

The west tower is 48m high and originally had a stone spire. After 1843, it was given a new brick spire which was demolished in 1866. It will never be rebuilt but its truncated shape is preserved. The oldest bell in Veurne, called t Bommetje (in French the bombed), dates from 1379 and is part of this carillon.

All that remains of the original church is the lower part of the tower, on the west side. This ancient portal features Christ in the center, flanked by the Virgin Mary and the Apostle John. The first mentions of renovations date from 1439. In 1494, the building was completely demolished and rebuilt. In 1775, the central choir was extended to the east. In the 19th century, interior renovations led to the removal of nine altars as well as most of the statues.

Inside is a white marble statue representing Saint-Nicolas made by Philippe Parmentier.
