Canopy Shores Park is located along the Matanzas River which has attracted human activity for thousands of years. Indigenous population took advantage of areas along the shore with higher terrain drained soils and within a multitude of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The adjacent marshlands were used as a food source and well-drained soils helped contribute to habitable and prosperous native communities. The surrounding region is suspected of having been the location of a large Timucuan village prior to the arrival of Europeans. Large shell middens and other features indicate intensive, long term occupation of this region covering a 4,000-year time span as well as historic material dating to the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
