Fort Peyton was a U.S. Army installation established in 1837 and was one of a chain of military outposts created during the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). The fort consisted of four log houses, a hospital and a commissary. The installation was first known as Fort Moultrie, but its name was changed in honor of Lieutenant Richard H. Peyton, post commander in 1837. Fort Peyton was ordered abandoned in 1840 and in 1842 a fire burned the buildings to the ground. The former fort site is approximately 1 mile south of Treaty Park and can be accessed from Winterhawk Drive.
