In 1837, Osceola (1804-1838) and several other Seminole representatives arrived at a location approximately one mile south of Fort Peyton to meet with the U.S. Government to begin peace negotiations, although the exact location is unknown. Osceola carried a flag of truce however Brigadier General Joseph Hernandez captured Osceola and all other members of the tribe gathered there. The U.S. Army took the captives to St. Augustine and imprisoned them at Fort Marion (the Castillo de San Marcos). After several of the prisoners escaped, Osceola was transferred to Fort Moultirie on South Carolina, where he died from illness.
