A few days later, the cable of the same company began to operate between Vigo and Carcavelos , Portugal , which were the first in Spain and the only ones for eleven years. On May 28, 1933, sixty years later, the beginning of Cable Inglés was remembered by the then chronicler of the city, Avelino Rodríguez Elías .
Thanks to the cable, Faro de Vigo gave the first news of the arrival of the Plus Ultra in Buenos Aires .
José Ramón Cabanelas, author of the book El mundo Vía-Vigo , published by the Instituto de Estudios Vigueses , remembers that Cable Inglés operated in Vigo until December 31, 1969 .
History
Avelino Rodríguez Elías recalled the anniversary, noting that the cable from Bilbao to England was not inaugurated until 1884, so Vigo's telegraphic-submarine communications were the first in Spain, and for eleven years, the only ones the nation had. For Eastern Telegraph C.° Ltd the importance of the Port of Vigo was above all others in Spain. The company's cables were moored on a beach below the Laxe batteries.
The creators and their residence in Vigo
The first director of the English Cable station in Vigo was CJ Murphy and among the various officials who held that position, John Rose stood out, whose family, linked by marriage ties to families from Vigo, established their residence in Vigo.
Another was Lehmann, who stayed in Vigo after retiring, who adapted to this land in such a way that he spoke Spanish like a Spaniard and conversed with the natives in their own language.
Other officials of Cable Inglés made Vigo their second homeland, and their families became families from Vigo.
The last officers
Between 1873 and 1969 the "Cable Inglés" made Vigo one of the references in Europe in telegraph communication . Through the company's offices messages passed that could cross the world. The success of these communications depended to a large extent on Antonio Vázquez, James Skinner, John Staton, Francisco Barcia and Fernando Merino, the last technical officers of the Eastern Telegraph Company in Vigo

The officers of the Eastern Telegraph contributed to the promotion of sports in Vigo, especially football . Whether it was playing against teams from Vigo, or forming teams with them, they have been practicing soccer since 1895. Perhaps, when Spain was hardly even aware of the existence of the game. Thanks to this, football from Vigo was able to count on such an old history, since in 1903 the Vigo Lighthouse published chronicles of the matches that were played in the old Malecón field, noting that the officials of the English Cable made up a great team.
