This bridge was built in 1793 by Banff stonemason James Robertson at the cost of the 3rd Earl of Aberdeen, to cross the River Ythan northwards into the town centre of Ellon, a small town some twenty miles north of the city of Aberdeen in north-east Scotland.
The bridge would carry the A92 trunk road and features three segmental keyblocked arches with V-cutwaters in coursed pinned rubble with granite ashlar dressings. The central arch is larger than the others, both outer arches partly cross flood plains on both sides of the river.
The bridge was replaced by a newer wider bridge in 1944 immediately to the west, both bridges almost meeting at the northern end. This new bridge now carries the A920 over the river. The Auld Brig, as it is locally known is now in use only for pedestrians and cyclists.
