"The yoke comes in several forms: it can be an iron collar connected to a chain, and attached to the post or the wall, but it can also take the form of a wooden device, in two parts, which consists of two wooden pieces with in each three half circles, two small for the hands, and a large one for the neck.

When the device is closed, it therefore forms three circles, large enough to insert the prisoner's wrists and neck, and small enough to prevent him from moving and getting out.

"Le carcan se présente sous plusieurs formes : ce peut être un collier de fer relié à une chaîne, et attaché au poteau ou au mur, mais il peut aussi se présenter sous la forme d'un dispositif en bois, en deux parties, qui est constitué de deux pièces en bois avec dans chacune trois demis cercle, deux petit pour les mains, et un grand pour le cou.

Lorsque l´on ferme le dispositif, cela forme donc trois cercles, assez grand pour qu'on y insère les poignets et le cou du prisonnier, et assez petit pour l'empêcher de bouger et de sortir.
