Eglise-halle d’une rare unité et d’une grande qualité, bâtie à la jonction des XVe et XVIe siècles, elle a été épargnée par les destructions. De construction Bourgogne, elle a été classée en 1958. L’intérieur est caractérisé par l’heureuse proportion des nefs, des colonnades et des voûtes, dans une atmosphère très lumineuse. Au chevet, la sacristie avec un toit bulbe date du XVIIe siècle. L’église est dédiée à Saint-Sylvestre, évêque au IIIe siècle.

La paroisse existait depuis le XIe siècle, Robert VAN CAPPEL, conseiller et maître d’autel du Duc de Bourgogne, avait fait édifier une chapelle en 1405. Les verrières datent du XVIe siècle, travail remarquable de la fin du gothique et début Renaissance. Classées dès 1903, elles ont été déposées en 1939 et reposées en 1962. On ne sait pas ce qu’est devenu le reste des verrières. L’orgue, la chaire, le confessionnal datent du XVIIe siècle. Les autres confessionnaux, le dais de procession, les lambris des piliers du chœur, les parcloses, la Vierge de douleur et le Christ à la colonne datent du XVIIIe siècle.

Les retables datent de la première moitié du XVIIIème siècle :


Le retable Sud, de Sainte-Anne ou de la Sainte Famille. Le tableau représente l’éducation de la Vierge. Dans la niche, Sainte-Anne accompagnée de Marie, sa fille, et de l’enfant Jésus.
Le retable Nord : dédié à la Vierge. Le tableau représente l’Assomption. Dans la niche, la vierge à l’enfant. L’ancien tabernacle, transformé en niche, abrite une statuette de l’enfant Jésus, les bustes de Sainte-Catherine d’Alexandrie et de Sainte-Barbe.
Le gisant de Ludwine VAN CAPPEL, fille de Robert VAN CAPPEL décédée en 1405, la représente couchée, dans une attitude de veille.
La table de communion est une des plus belles de Flandre : les panneaux traitent des sujets bibliques, le tout séparé par des vertus.
Le buste reliquaire de Saint-Sylvestre, attribuable à VAN BROUCKORST ou à Jean ELSCHOECHT date d’avant 1759, date à laquelle il est doré par Joseph COMBOS.

On y trouve également un grand nombre de pierres tombales, dont une à l’entrée, d’un prêtre mort en 1565. L’église a été entièrement rénovée, ce qui lui a permis de retrouver tout son éclat d’antan. L’orgue historique de West-Cappel date de 1683 et a été créé par le facteur d’orgues Jan VAN BELLE. Il est l’un des rares à avoir gardé 90% de ses pièces d’origine, d’où sa spécificité. Ses tuyaux du XVIIe siècle sont en étain, plomb laminé et chêne. Quelques tuyaux de complément sont neufs. C’est un orgue au tempérament mésotonique : accordé à la tierce juste. Il est donc impossible de jouer toutes les tonalités. Le clavier, en buis et feintes en ébène est composé de 45 notes. Il n’y a pas de pédalier.

Description

A hall church of rare unity and of high quality, built at the junction of the 15th and 16th centuries, it was spared from destruction. Built in Burgundy, it was listed in 1958. The interior is characterized by the happy proportion of the naves, colonnades and vaults, in a very bright atmosphere. At the chevet, the sacristy with a bulbous roof dates from the 17th century. The church is dedicated to Saint-Sylvestre, bishop in the 3rd century.

The parish had existed since the 11th century, Robert VAN CAPPEL, adviser and altar master to the Duke of Burgundy, had a chapel built in 1405. The windows date from the 16th century, remarkable work from the end of the Gothic and early Renaissance. Classified in 1903, they were removed in 1939 and reinstalled in 1962. We do not know what became of the rest of the windows. The organ, the pulpit, the confessional date from the 17th century. The other confessionals, the processional canopy, the paneling of the pillars of the choir, the glazing beads, the Virgin of Sorrows and Christ at the column date from the 18th century.

The altarpieces date from the first half of the 18th century:


The South Altarpiece, of Saint Anne or of the Holy Family. The painting represents the education of the Virgin. In the niche, Saint Anne accompanied by Mary, her daughter, and the child Jesus.
The North altarpiece: dedicated to the Virgin. The painting represents the Assumption. In the niche, the Virgin and Child. The old tabernacle, transformed into a niche, houses a statuette of the child Jesus, the busts of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Barbara.
The recumbent figure of Ludwine VAN CAPPEL, daughter of Robert VAN CAPPEL who died in 1405, represents her lying down, in a watchful attitude.
The communion table is one of the most beautiful in Flanders: the panels deal with biblical subjects, all separated by virtues.
The reliquary bust of Saint-Sylvestre, attributable to VAN BROUCKORST or Jean ELSCHOECHT dates from before 1759, when it was gilded by Joseph COMBOS.

There are also a large number of tombstones, including one at the entrance, of a priest who died in 1565. The church has been completely renovated, which has restored it to its former glory. The historic organ of West-Cappel dates from 1683 and was created by the organ builder Jan VAN BELLE. It is one of the few to have kept 90% of its original parts, hence its specificity. Its 17th century pipes are made of pewter, rolled lead and oak. Some additional pipes are new. It is an organ with a mesotonic temperament: tuned to the perfect third. It is therefore impossible to play all the tones. The keyboard, in boxwood and ebony feints, is made up of 45 notes. There is no pedal board.
