A few hours before the crash, the bomber had taken off from Waddington airfield in England for a bombing flight to Essen. The aircraft was attacked at 03:16 by a German night fighter. After the attack, the aircraft continued to fly for several minutes, after which it crashed vertically and fell apart. After it became light, local residents found 6 of the 7 killed airmen. On July 22, the last victim was found while mowing the rye.
