Businessman Strother M. Beeson, who lived in the mansion on the other side of the road, purchased this property and constructed this ornate marble mausoleum in 1869 for his mother, Judith Ann Lewis. Tragically, jost one year later, Beeson's infant son died at age eleven months and is also interred here. His mother, Harriet Beeson, could not bear his loss and would spend evenings here cradling the body of her dead boy, changing his clothes and even breast-feeding the dead infant. Eventually driven into insanity, she also passed away and is interred here with her mother-in-law and son. It is said that her spirit still haunts both the mausoleum and the mansion.
