"The Medici-Riccardi Palace was commissioned, in 1444, by Cosimo the Elder to Michelozzo, who, inspired by Leon Battista Alberti, made an austere and sober building. The imposing cubic mass and the elegant façade, with its gradual padding, to give slenderness , and the pointed windows with arches became the official prototype of Renaissance civil architecture and the symbol of the political power of the Medicis.
The building was the residence of this family for about a hundred years, until, in 1659, it became the property of the Riccardi family, who carried out Baroque reforms.
In 1814, the Riccardi sold the palace to the State and, since 1874, it has been property of the province.
Currently, it is the seat of the provincial council, the residence of the prefect and the important Medici-Riccardi Palace Museum. Inside the palace-museum, it is necessary to visit, in addition to the two courtyards, the Chapel of the Three Kings and the Gallery.
The first has the frescoes, by the will of Cosimo the Elder, by Benozzo Bozzoli, who painted the theme of the parade of the wise men on three levels, portraying Lorenzo the Magnificent and Giuliano in the representations, to recall the fundamental role of the Medici family in the life of Florence.
The gallery on the first floor, commissioned by the Riccardi family, is one of the few examples of Florentine Baroque: it has a 14th-century vault decorated by Luca Giordano, who painted the Apotheosis of the Medici family. In addition, the palace has in its cellars a museum of Roman marbles, with sculptures and tombstone material."
