"The beautiful Albertian façade of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella enhances, if possible, its value with the two astronomical devices that Father Egnazio Danti built in the 1670s: an armillary sphere with two rings on the left side and a sundial with multiple gnomons on the right side.

Danti was professor of mathematics in Bologna, ducal cosmographer of Cosimo I and member of the commission for the change of the Julian Calendar. The son of an architect, he lived between science and art, and had as a principle that mathematical knowledge should reach artisans, navigators and the common people. Danti is responsible for the first great meridian of the camera obscura of San Petronio in Bologna.
The armilla was the clearest testimony to the whole world that the equinox was not taking place on the 21st but on the 11th of March. One of the rings, the vertical (meridian) shows solar noon, while the other is equatorial, and therefore at the equinox it will only project a horizontal segment instead of an ellipse.

The virtuous quadrant on the right was a marble slab perpendicular to the façade supported by a corbel with six different functions on one side and the other. Currently, a faithful replica restored in aluminum and resin can be seen. The six clocks show Italian time (counts from the north wind), Bohemian time (counts from dawn), astronomical time (begins at solar noon), common time ultramontane (French, Spanish and German: twelve hours from midnight to noon), planetary time (Hebrew and Roman: zero hour at dawn, six at noon and twelve at dusk), and the canonical hours (for the worship of monks: none , first, third, sixth, ninth and twelfth).
